Oral contraceptive
Yasmin- new chapter in per oral contraceptive.
Prevention of undesirable pregnancy is not an invention of the recent years. The first reference about contraception methods is related to the 16 century BC. One source of archaeological excavation shows women which used a swab saturated with acacia juice called arabic gum. Arabic gum was helpful for the neutralization of sperm cells due to the activation the release of lactic acid. Other methods based on natural substances were popular among women as well. For many centuries the medical science tried to invent the more efficient and safe birth control method.
For the last 50 years scientific and technical progress contributed to the discovery of highly effective(nearly 100%) protection of the unwanted pregnancy.
Years of numerous investigations in the field of hormonal contraceptive drug allowed German pharmaceutical company Schering occupy a leading place in production of the most efficient and safe hormonal birth control pills. The most significant result of the extensive medical and pharmaceutical researches was the discovery of oral monophasic low-dosed contraceptive Yasmin.
Yasmin consists of two active ingredients- ethynilestradiol and drosperinone. Ethynilestradiol is a synthetic female sex hormone. Drosperinone is a steroid hormone that prevents the activity of mineralcorticoid. Drosperinone possesses a light diuretic effect and ,thus, prevents water congestion in organism. Unique drosperinone properties allow to eliminate edema, lower excessive body weight and relieve the symptoms of PMS(premenstrual syndrome). Droperinone is also helpful in prevention of hirsutism as well as androgen dependent diseases like acne and seborrhea.
In one clinical trial 195 women were taking Yasmin tablets for six months. During these investigations no one women became pregnant. Women noticed significant decrease of premenstrual syndrome’s symptoms, improvements in general feeling and moderate weigh loss.
Besides its high therapeutic activity, Yasmin is safe and side effects are not common. Usually Yasmin does not cause any significant side effects. Possible adverse reactions include: pain and discharges out of the mammary glands, headache, migraines, changes in sexual desire, intolerance of contact lenses, nausea and vomiting. Some people may develop chlaosma. Usually these side effects are possible in women with known hypersensitivity or allergy to steroid preparations.
Yasmin tablets can be used in women over 18 years of age. However, it’s recommended to begin contraception with Yasmin after 24 years. Yasmin should not be taken in women with certain health problems. These contraindications include:
" Cardiovascular diseases
